Family owned and operated
Since 1969, John Slaman Greenhouses Ltd has been owned and operated by the Slaman family under the brand name Slaman’s Quality Flowers. Today Brian Slaman, Theo Slaman, and Stephanie Slaman manage operations and steward the company for continued success.
After World War II, John Slaman and his parents William and Petronella Slaman emigrated from the Netherlands bringing with them the famous “Dutch glass house green thumb." They established Echo Place Florist greenhouses in Brantford Ontario in 1954. Soon after, John separated from his family business to start his own 18,000 sq.ft. of greenhouse in 1969 in nearby Burford. The business grew quickly to 63,000 sq.ft.
1987 marked a change in owners for Slaman's Quality Flowers as John’s children, Brian and Mike embarked on a co-ownership. Their first impact was to add an additional 37,000 sq. ft. of glass for the increased market demand. In 1990 they discovered lisianthus and added this unique flower to Slaman's production. After a few years of seasonal lisianthus production they decided to grow them year-round which was accomplished through the addition of 45,000 sq. ft. of greenhouses. The Burford greenhouses now had 150,000 sq.ft of production and propagation greenhouses plus warehousing and offices.
Brian became sole owner in 2012 and looked to the next stages of company growth. In 2021 ownership changed again as Theo and Stephanie joined the ownership team with Brian and embarked on a significant company expansion adding an additional 150,000 sq. ft. of greenhouses.
With over 300,000 sq.ft. of greenhouses, the latest in sustainable production technologies, and an eye on future growth, Slaman's continues to drive innovation and quality in the Canadian floriculture industry.
